Two people were killed and at least nine others were wounded in a shooting on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island, authorities said, as law enforcement continued to search for the suspect. The violence took place on Saturday afternoon in an engineering building where students were attending final exams.
Police and campus officials received reports of gunfire just after 4 p.m. local time near the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building. First responders found multiple victims with gunshot injuries. Those wounded were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where medical staff treated a range of trauma, with several patients listed in critical but stable condition.
Brown University activated its emergency alert system, urging students and staff to shelter in place while officers swept academic and residential buildings. Dozens of tactical units from local and federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, joined the effort to locate the person believed to be responsible. As of early Sunday, no arrests had been reported and the suspect was still at large.
Authorities described the suspected shooter as a man in dark clothing. Police released surveillance footage showing an individual believed to be connected with the incident walking away from the scene, but officials have not confirmed the personโs identity. Investigators are reviewing video and collecting witness information as they pursue leads.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the shelter-in-place order remained in effect into the evening while officers worked to secure the area and gather evidence. University President Christina Paxson expressed sorrow over the loss of life and pledged support for students and families affected by the shooting.
Students described chaotic scenes as the alert spread. Some hid under desks or took cover in nearby buildings until law enforcement declared it safe to move. The shooting has disrupted the second day of final exams and triggered a broad police response in the surrounding neighbourhood.
